It can sometimes be difficult to know how much work to do for mocks. On the one hand, they’re certainly not as important as the real exams. However, are there lasting benefits from revising for these?

The individual

As with most things, it really depends on the individual student when determining how much revision you should do. Some students are more academic than others and don’t need to put as much work in. If you’re wanting to secure a certain grade in your mocks, your individual performance in each subject should be considered. Often, students succeed in some subjects over others, and they need to pay more attention to their weaker subjects. How much a student revises for the mock exams is therefore up to the individual.

Why it’s not vital to do much revision

There’s just no doubt about it – as mentioned above, mock exams just aren’t as important as real exams. Whilst the mock exams give an indication of a student’s position, they really don’t matter much in the bigger picture. No mock exam results will be put on your CV, nor will they be remembered. Therefore, you arguably don’t have to do much revision for mocks. However, there are other points to consider.

Why it’s vital to do a good amount of revision

Many argue that attending a October half term revision course is vital for mock exams. Teachers might recommend that students revise a couple of hours a day over the space of a few weeks. Whilst this might seem excessive, there are important reasons for this. For example, mock exams are a good indication of progress. They can highlight your weak areas so you can focus more on them in the future. Also, the indication can allow you to know if you’re in a good position for the real exam or not. They are technically a practice run, so you might want to take advantage of this. They can also give your teachers an indication of how you’re doing. This could motivate the teachers to focus on certain topics and help you in areas you struggled with.

Furthermore, the mock exams could be incredibly significant if there’re extreme circumstances that stop you from taking the real exam. Although rare, extreme circumstances do happen, and they have stopped students from taking exams in the past. When this happens, universities and employers usually look at students’ mock results to gain a feel for the student’s ability. Therefore, you should revise and try hard for mock exams as this could happen to anyone.

Additionally, revising a decent amount for the mock exams could benefit you in the long run. Revising throughout the year could help you retain information when it comes to taking real examinations. This could make your revision more efficient in the long run. If you revise hard for your mocks, you should know the specification very well by the end of the year.

Therefore, the amount a student revises can vary with everyone, although it’s certainly recommended that you do a substantial amount to benefit yourself in the long run!
