Can You Teach Yourself A level Chemistry?

Education concept. Student studying and brainstorming campus con

Chemistry is arguably one of the most challenging A levels out there – so many students may be wondering if it’s doable to teach this subject yourself. The truth is, there’s no singular answer to this one – some students may be able to manage it, whilst some students will struggle even with the guidance of a properly qualified teacher. So, what can you do to teach yourself A level chemistry?

Put the work in

I suppose that this key point is stating the obvious, but this one goes for any A level too. A level qualifications are a big step up from GCSE, and many get a shock from discovering how challenging this work actually is. If you want to teach this subject yourself, you’d have to put even more effort in to secure the grade you’re after. Without a teacher’s help, you’d have to teach yourself concepts, theories, and chemical equations all from your course’s textbook or other resources, a lot of which are often now online.

You’d need to take yourself through the entire syllabus with the textbook, practising questions and past papers throughout the academic year to make sure you’re understanding what the examiner is after. Mark schemes can be good for taking you through the more difficult questions, as are online videos, in which people often talk through each topic on the curriculum to give you a better understanding of what type of things may come up in the exam.

Teaching yourself this way is possible, although only the most talented and hardworking students may find this remotely doable – you’d have to have a lot of willpower to bring yourself to teach yourself the work, and you’d need a keen mind to understand everything without professional guidance.

With this in mind, it could be recommended that students study chemistry with the help of a teacher or even a tutor since it is an incredibly demanding subject.

Even the most intelligent students sometimes struggle with the concepts in chemistry at A level, and this subject isn’t to be taken lightly – teachers and tutors get paid for a reason, so it might be worth asking them for help or letting them talk through each module to allow yourself the chance of getting the best grade possible. Getting an online chemistry tutor to teach you will take pressure off yourself of having less work to do, and teachers often have a lot of great tips and supplies for those pesky exams.

All in all, teaching yourself A level chemistry could be possible for some students if you’re willing to put in an exceptional amount of work and are confident that you can take yourself through each module with time management, a grasp of concepts, and an understanding of the formulas.

However, it may be worth considering getting taught by someone – allowing a professional to be on your journey with you could help improve your grade. Sometimes, it’s not worth putting your grade at risk if you need a specific qualification to study in further education or secure employment.
