Thinking about choosing A level maths at college? It’s an incredibly respected A level, being recognised by universities and employers all over the country, and is certainly one of the most important subjects you could study at college.

But what do you really need to know? Read on to take a look at if A level maths is really best suited to you or not.

Hard work

There’s no doubt about it – you can’t just expect to get a good grade in A level maths without putting the effort in. As arguably one of the most challenging A levels out there, maths requires a good chunk of your attention.

Whilst many find AS rather straightforward, the subject gets harder and harder as you go further into it. It’s recommended that you should study throughout the academic year and consider attending an A Level Maths Revision Course rather than just cramming your revision in just before the exam.

Even if it’s just revising for 15 minutes a day, it’s still going to make you a lot more prepared going into the exam than if you don’t put the work in and have a weak grasp of knowledge. Furthermore, attend as many classes as you can, and it might also be worth going through your whole textbook and answering all the questions within it.

Maths is not an easy subject and you’ll need to work to understand all the mathematical concepts and theories to get the grade you desire – try to get to know the specification inside out.

If you’re struggling to understand everything in the textbook, be prepared to seek a teacher or tutor’s help on this – you need to be aware that the grading system at GCSE is much easier and that A level is a huge step up.

Becoming A More Qualified Student

This one might be obvious – A level maths is all about becoming more skilled, more academic, and, principally, more qualified as an individual. Whether you want to proceed to further study or secure yourself an apprenticeship or job, an A level maths qualification is all about giving you those transferrable skills which you can apply to your life in the real world.

Problem-solving, communication, analytical thinking, and time management are just some of the desirable skills that an A level in maths will help you secure and are also some of the first skills that employers will want their employees to have.

A level maths is all about developing your academic journey and allowing you to apply yourself to certain situations and tasks. This qualification can also help you with your other studies – for example, you have to apply some mathematical skill in the main sciences and some of the social sciences.

You may have to know your way around statistics or certain mathematical formulas in psychology, chemistry, and physics, just to name a few!

So, there you have it. Hopefully, this will have given you a bigger idea about what A level maths is all about and whether it’s for you or not. Good luck with your studies!
