The world is gradually getting over the shock caused by the coronavirus pandemic. We are all still struggling to adjust to the new normal. This means that some of the routines which we adopted before now may have been messed up, including our study schedules.

However, even as academic institutions are moving on, you should also do likewise. So here are some effective study skills to help you adequately prepare for your exams during this pandemic.

5 tips for effective study during a pandemic

1.  Effective time management

This is one skill every successful student must master. You can draw up a timetable that will specify topics and subjects you read at each particular time.

Choose what works for you best. Be it a manual timetable, alarms, or reminders, but by all means, have something other than your immediate preference to decide what you study.

To better manage your time, you must also learn to gently but firmly say no to family and friends who innocently encroach into your study time. Without this approach, you will end up sacrificing valuable irrecoverable reading time.

2.  Create a reading space

Now that physical access to school libraries have been temporarily denied; for effective studies during this pandemic, try to create a reading nest for yourself. This can be an entire room dedicated to serving as your own personal reading room. Or a corner in a room set apart to accommodate your reading tools.

Whichever is the case, simply prepare a comfortable area where you can spend some reading time without getting too comfortable either.

This is because many students succumb to cognitive distractions, even though they have avoided every other distraction.

3.  Maintain communication with fellow students

With the lockdown and so many social regulations in place, getting bored or feeling lonely is normal.  You are not alone. This is now commonplace as a result of the closing of schools and other social gatherings.

In order to keep yourself motivated it is important to maintain communication with your fellow peers at school or college. You can do this by creating online chatting or video platforms, where you guys can meet up at certain times of the day or week.

But, to maximise your time, such meetings should be timed and productive. Begin with chit chats, but also share ideas about your forthcoming exam. This way, you kill two birds with one stone.

4.  Utilise the internet

Due to the pandemic, access to physical tutorials and tutors may be regimented. And so to effectively study during this time, one of the very valuable tools you need is the internet.

No matter the exam at hand, be it your GCSE, IGCSE, A level, etc, so many resources are available online to aid your learning. You could sign up for tutorials, one on one lectures, or YouTube videos. All these come with the unique benefit of helping you learn at your own pace.

You just have to be diligent to ensure that your reading time remains your reading time. So avoid the temptation of getting lost on the internet playing games, or watching videos unrelated to your exam.

5.  Set goals/targets

One of the basic requirements of every goal is that it must be realistic and attainable. To effectively study during this pandemic, you have to set achievable goals. Prepare your timetable to suit your daily itineraries.

It would not be wise to set a goal of 5 hours daily read when you have 12 hours daily shift.
