The Importance Of Mock Exams

Many students consider mock exams a waste of precious reading time. They argue that at the end of the day, their scores are useless to their final grade. Some even dread it, considering it unfair to write a fake version of their looming exam.

However, understanding the importance of a mock exam will turn this table and make you begin to look forward to it. Below are some of the most essentials benefits of mock exams.

Importance of mock exams

1.  Encourages you to start an early revision

The knowledge of an imminent mock exam encourages you to burn the candle at both ends. Research shows that 75% of students agree that they are procrastinators. And so whether you have not been reading due to overconfidence or laziness, a mock exam will cause you to start an early revision.

Mock exams also teach you to try out different revision techniques. Instead of randomly preparing for the exam, a forthcoming mock exam compels students to seek out strategic revision techniques that will aid them in acing the exam.

Some effective revision techniques include flashcards, practice papers, spacing out revision sessions, and teaching each other.

2.  Helps to identify students weaknesses

You may sometimes fail to give attention to certain topics. Most times, because the questions are difficult, you are familiar with them or they are not on your list of favourites.

But by participating in mock exams will help you identify your weaknesses. These questions are often tailored to suit your upcoming GCSE or A level curriculum. As a result, your performance usually highlights the areas calling for improvement and points out the need to give more attention to those topics and to have no favourites. This is because your examiner is not privy to your list of favourite topics.

Treat them as the real thing

3.  Builds students’ confidence

Mock exams are not only for the benefit of students who are struggling to prepare for an exam. They are also very useful to students who are doing well.

A good grade after the mock exam will serve to boost confidence. It encourages students to keep up the hard work and to continue utilising the approaches they used for their studies and revision.

4.  Helps you to practice working under exam conditions

Students who have not trained themselves to work under exam conditions perform poorly after exams. This is because exam pressure has a way of eliciting certain emotions from them. Emotions such as anxiety and nerves can cause students to make grievous mistakes.  This invariably affects their general performance in the exam.

But with a mock exam, the quasi-exam environment, trains you to handle the pressure that comes with it. So you need not wait for mock exams, you can create your mock exams, aimed at helping you deal with exam pressures and well maths planned revision.

5.  Allows you to learn from your mistakes

You must have heard that your best teacher is your last mistake. Mock exams take this stance. They show you your areas of weakness and if properly utilised, will keep you from stepping on the same rake again.
